Challenge #1: I am

Who are you?

This seems like a very easy and straight-forward question, but when was the last time that you really tried to articulate an answer. You may have thought that you figured that out a long time ago, or perhaps you feel like you are still figuring it out. What better way to start this Challenge. No matter what type of art you make it is always a reflection of you. The journal is no different. Heck, it might even be more true of the journal.

Take some time to ponder and journal about all the aspects of your “self,” and create a response that introduces you to the world.

Who are you? What is important to you? Where do you come from? How does your inner identity compare to your outer identity? Do you have a hidden identity? If you are not who you want to be, what is stopping you?

Don’t forget to share a link to your response in Comments.

I was actually half way through a self portrait page in my journal when your prompt popped up in my reader - great timing!

here's the finished page:

I blog about visual journaling, but more for my students to kind of follow along with a class I was teaching than anything else. Now, the class has ended, and I am encouraging anyone who was participating to take on this challenge! I hope that this community does develop... I can't wait to see!

Best of luck on your second book! Thanks for the inspiration.

Hello, what a great book and how nice to found some new challenges on the web!
I popped in later, so I would love to refer to my SelfPortret I made earlier, I hope you don't mind.

Thank you for this challenge! I knew about your blog but remembered to follow it when I ran into both of you at the Seattle conference. I look forward to catching up on the weekly challenges. My hectic schedule has left me out of the studio and my journal has become even more important to ground me in why I do all of I do.

I am an art teacher who recently left the classroom to be Coordinator of Teen and College programs at NC Museum of Art. The entry I created reveals how I have struggled in this transition of identity. I had already started a page before your challenge exploring this and incorporating the work of Bob Troutman who just exhibited at NCMA. Here is my 'I am..' response: http://michelleharrell.daportfolio.com/gallery/234692#15

At the bottom of this page is the latest image exploring that very same topic.
"Evolving," is how I like to think of myself.
