JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 31: Challenge

What are some of our biggest challenges? How do we face and confront them?

Our lives are filled with challenges, some welcomed and others not. We might have challenges with our health, our emotions, our finances, our relationships, our work, our neighbors, and our environments. A flat tire when we’re running late is an annoying challenge. A spouse asking for a divorce is a life altering challenge. Moving to a new city for a new job can be an exciting challenge. We might struggle to get out of bed in the morning or make it to work on time. Or we might bring a new challenge on ourselves like picking up a new hobby, getting more exercise, or finding more time to make art. Life is full off big and little challenges. How do we rise up and meet them?

For the last day of the JFJ Big Idea Challenge, explore some of the challenges in your life. Maybe it’s about a minor challenge you deal with everyday, or maybe it’s a big, life altering challenge. Maybe it’s simple a reflection on the last 30 days and the Big Idea Challenge.

It’s been awesome seeing those posts, and remember that it’s ok if you didn't get to complete them all. So don’t feel like you need to catch up, but if you’re still working on them, don’t forget those hashtags. #jfjbigideas or #jfj16

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 30: Boundaries

What are some of our personal boundaries? What do we do when someone crosses our boundaries?

We all need our boundaries - a limit to the things that we’ll do or tolerate. Without clearly defined boundaries, we can find ourselves in some pretty uncomfortable or compromising positions. When we define our limits and know that there are things that we can’t do, won’t do, and would never consider doing, we have a stronger sense of ourselves. We have to know our boundaries so that we do not cross those lines and so that we can make certain that others do not cross them as well. Of course, there are boundaries that we can push and tiptoe beside. We can stretch them and test them. But as long as we know them, we can know ourselves.

Examine your boundaries today. How do you define them and protect them. Respond in any way that seems appropriate to you.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 29: Sanctuary

Where do we go when we are in need of sanctuary? How do we find safe places where we can rest and gather strength?

Our world can be hectic and energy draining. We can feel bombarded by the demands of our day-to-day lives, and we can feel pulled in a hundred directions at once. Sometimes we need to step back and find a safe place to go to for our own security or peace of mind. For some, hiking a mountain trail is a sanctuary. For others a chair on a beach provides that much needed place for rest and rejuvenation. And for others, the studio, a local hangout, or the garden provide a daily place of sanctuary. No matter where we find it, our places of sanctuary provide us with safety, a place to rest and reflect, and a time to come back to ourselves.

Explore your places of sanctuary today. Where do you go when you need some time for yourself? You might want to examine what those places mean to you and what you get from being there.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 28: Family

What are our family dynamics? Who have we taken into our families?

There’s the family that we’re born with, and then there’s the family that you choose. Family is important to us social creatures. Sometimes we are very close to our families, and other times we just don’t get along with them. Sometimes we don’t even know our biological families if we were adopted. But families come in many shapes, sizes, and configurations, and we can call anyone family who is there for us. We don’t have to be related by blood to be family. Love, respect, and connection are all that’s needed.

Take time today to reflect on your family. You may want to look at your parents, your siblings, your spouse, or your children. You may want look at other relatives, or you might want to look at the family of friends that you have around you.

We’re getting close to the end, so keep those posts coming. It’s great to see what others are doing. #jfjbigideas or #jfj16

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 27: Pain

What causes us pain in our lives? How do we deal with it?

Pain is a part of life. It’s not a pleasant part of it, but it is part of life none the less. Pain can come at us from a variety of sources. Our own bodies can cause us physical pain when we are injured or sick, and we might have to deal with the pain with medicine or first aid. We can be in emotional pain as well, perhaps the loss of someone close or perhaps we didn’t get something we wanted dearly. This kind of pain can be a bit harder to deal with. There’s no prescription for heartache or disappointment. But we experience pain consistently in our lives - sometimes minor and sometimes major. How we deal with it is what’s important.

Spend some time today exploring the idea of pain. Perhaps focus on some physical issue that you're dealing with, or perhaps focus on something that has been irritating you - something that has been a “pain in your side”. Take a closer look at something more personal or emotional, or respond to the idea of pain in very general ways. Just allow the idea to spark your creating.

Goings On!

I was just looking over the calendar and finished updating our Events page with some things that are coming up over the next nine months, and I can’t believe that we’re almost into August already. Where has the summer gone? Art Unraveled is next week! How did it get here so quickly? If you haven’t registered yet, online registration closes tomorrow. After that you’ll have to register on site. We still have plenty of room in our workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, and we’d love to have you.

Beyond Art Unraveled, the Fall is definitely shaping up with lots going on. But since I am no longer gainfully employed as a public school art teacher, a busy schedule is definitely a good thing. Dave and I will be traveling to Florida and Colorado for their state’s Art Education Conferences. We’ll be giving a keynote speech as well as one or two workshops at each conference. If you’re an art teacher in either state, come out and see us in the fall. We’re looking forward to connecting to all the art educators.

In a departure from our normal thing, I’ll be presenting at a veterinarian conference in October. I’ll be presenting about using the visual journal as a tool for coping with a beloved pet’s illness or passing. I’m looking forward to taking the visual journal to a different audience. My wife, who is a licensed veterinarian technician, says she can’t wait to take a workshop with me. It’s nice that our worlds can come together.

Dave and I will be heading back to Portland, OR for Art and Soul in Spring 2017. We’ll be teaching three workshops at this annual retreat. It’s never too early to plan a trip to Portland, and registration is open. I’m hoping to set up more workshops for the Fall and Spring at other venues both near and far, and I’ll keep things updated.

Besides all of the workshops, I have other things going on, and I’m busy working on things and figuring out the details.

First, I want to get an online shop going. I’ve dabbled in selling things through the JFJ website on and off over the years, and right now there are some resources available along with one online workshop. But I want to get a dedicated shop up and running by mid August, and I’ll have artwork for sale along with some downloadable resources. The plan is to sell paintings, drawings, and sculptures including my monsters along with a few downloadables.

Second, I want to get some more online workshops going. I had really hoped to have several up and running right now, but it wasn’t possible with teaching full time. So look for a couple to launch between now and the end of the year.

Third, I have a big project in mind that I’m giving myself until the Spring to bring about. David and I have talked about trying to get another book published, and we’ve submitted a few ideas, but nothing has taken off. So, I want to self publish something and make it available for download - another reason I need an online shop. Look for something more formal in a couple of months after I hammer out some logistics.

There’s a lot cooking in the JFJ kitchen, and I’m excited to be teaching workshops and working on lots of other projects. Stay tuned for updates! In the mean time, check out our Events page for an update of all the workshops, and check out the JFJ website for details about our currently available resources and online workshop.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 26: Compassion

How do we generate compassion for others? Are there times when others have shown us compassion?

Compassion is not about feeling sorry for someone else. It’s about having empathy for another and being able to place ourselves in their shoes. Compassion is not about doing something because it’s a nice or kind thing to do. It’s about doing something because it’s the human thing to do. Reaching out a helping hand when someone needs it, is recognition that everyone, ourselves included, needs a little help and a little understanding sometimes. It’s about recognizing that we are all connected.

Examine the role that compassion has in your life. Think about ways that you have shown compassion, or think about ways other people have shown you compassion.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 25: Power

Who has the power in your life? In what ways does power affect you?

Life can be a power struggle at times, and it seems that there are times in our lives when others hold power over us - our boss, our teachers, our parents. We can feel powerless or at least, not completely in control. Other times, we have full power over ourselves and our decisions, and we feel in total control. It is easy to fluctuate between feeling powerless to feeling powerful.

Take time today to reflect on the idea of power and how it affects your life. You may want to explore specific and personal stories of power, or you may want to explore the subject in more general terms. Respond in any way you want.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 24: Conflict

What causes some of our daily conflicts? How do we deal with conflicts when they arise in our lives?

Conflict can seem inevitable when two or more people are near each other. We might not like how loud someone is being. We may not like how they act or dress or talk. We might not like their political or religious views. We might just be irritating each other. Conflict can happen with total strangers at a store or on a social media site, and conflict can happen with the ones we love in our own homes. Conflicts can even be much larger than two people, and can involve whole families, groups, or nations. We may even feel conflicted ourselves.

Art is a great way to explore these conflicts, so use your art to look at the notion of conflict today. You may want to examine some personal or political conflicts, or you may want to react to the general idea of conflict.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 23: Humor

What do we find to be humorous? What makes us laugh, giggle, and chuckle.

Laughter is the best medicine, and finding humor in life is essential for keep ourselves balanced. Sometimes, it’s just a snicker at something on the tv or radio, and sometimes, it’s a big belly laugh at something our friend did or said. What moves us to laughter? Why do we find it so funny? Not everyone has the same sense of humor. Some people find humor in the dark and grisly, and others find humor in the whimsical and silly. What is your style of humor?

Spend some time today thinking about the things that make you laugh, giggle, and chuckle. Create a visual joke or pun, or just explore the notion of humor in any manner you wish.

Goodbye, Aloysius

Our hearts have been very heavy the past few days. We had to say goodbye to sweet kitty boy Aloysius. He was only fourteen years old, but he had been losing weight for quite sometime. The frustrating thing was we could never figure out what was wrong. All the tests came back relatively normal. We tried many different things to get him to eat and put on weight, but he took a turn for the worse this week.

Aloysius was one of our first fosters from the Loudoun County Animal Shelter along with his two brothers. Since they were the first, my wife gave them names that began with A, B, and C. I don't remember what they were, and I quickly made the suggestion of ostentatious names just to be silly. We began calling them Aloysius, Bartholomew, and Cromwell. Of course, Aloysius stuck.

Being an orange tabby, Aloysius was full of personality, and we quickly fell in love. We decided to adopt him at my suggestion, and his brothers went back to the shelter to find their forever homes. A couple of my favorite memories from his mischievous kitten years were eating pumpkin innards while carving jack-o-lanterns (above) and the way he sat in my hand because he was an itty bitty kitty (below).

Aloysius would come to have many nicknames. Squishy was probably the one we used the most because he was just a squishy kitty. You could pick him up, hold him, and snuggle him, and he just seemed to squish this way and that. But we often called him Squishy-wishy-roo-roo, Wish, Squsih, or Roo. He never lost his orange tabby personality, and he was a bit of a stinker up until the end. If you don't know what I mean by orange tabby personality, then you probably never lived with one. I highly recommend having one in your life.

We always had other cats in the house, but Squishy always hung out with the dogs. I swear he thought he was a dog, and he would snuggle a lot with our dog Poi (above) and play with our big shepherd-chow mix Percy.

In the end, our good friend Krisi Erwin of Wholistic Paws helped Squishy to the Rainbow Bridge. He was a special little cat, and we miss him terribly. The house feels so much emptier without him.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 22: Secrets

What are some of our biggest secrets? How do we feel when others keep secrets from us?

We all have our secrets. There are probably a few things that we have never told anyone, even those closest to us. Maybe they're little white lies that we tell our children or perhaps they are dark family tales that we keep hidden in the past. We keep secrets for many reasons - from throwing a surprise party to protecting ourselves. Often we hold onto secrets afraid of the ramifications if they were ever known. We cling to them and keep them hidden afraid that we will end up alone. But if we can never share those secrets, aren’t we alone anyway?

Examine some of your secrets today. You don’t have to blurt out your darkest, innermost secrets to the world, but you might want to see if there is anything that you want to expose to the light of day. You might want to explore the silly, little secrets that you keep from your children, spouse, or friends. Or you may just want to visit the topic in a general way.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 21: Loss

What are some of our greatest losses? How do we deal with losing something that we care about?

Loss is part of the game of being human. We lose things all the time - our favorite pen, our glasses, our left sock. We sometimes lose ourselves or lose someone we care about. Loss can be a minor irritant or a major upheaval in our lives. How do we deal with all of it? We can feel pain, anger, resentment, and sadness especially when it’s the loss of someone or something dear. We grieve, we cry. But eventually the sting of the loss subsides. We may never get over a major loss, but time eases the pain as we remember the good times.

Explore the idea of loss today. Examine a personal loss, or think about the idea in general terms. Think about little losses along with those big losses. Respond in anyway that seems appropriate.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 20: Paradox

What are some of our biggest paradoxes? Are there ways to accept both sides of ourselves?

As humans, we can be pretty paradoxical at times, and we can contain in ourselves, two opposites that seem to contradict one another. On one hand, we have the capacity for light and love, and on the other hand, we have the capacity for dark and hate. We can be strong and unyielding, and we can be soft and flexible. We can be wise yet still be foolish. These opposites are a part of us along with many others, and we can choose to strengthen one side and diminish the other. We may even find that it is impossible to hold a set of paradoxical ideas at once and that we must focus on one or another. Which will we dedicate our energies to strengthen?

Take time today to reflect on the notion of paradox. You may want to explore specific and personal paradoxes, or you may want to tackle the subject in more general terms. Just remember that there are two sides to every coin.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 19: Purpose

What is our purpose? Why are we here?

This is  a pretty big question, and it can be one of life’s most elusive queries. Many of us live with purpose and try to align ourselves with that purpose everyday. Many others are still trying to find the purpose which will guide our lives and bring us meaning. Without purpose, we can feel lost. Our lives can become a series of random and seemingly disconnected events, and we move through life reacting to the situation around us, instead of living with direction and intention. Purpose gives us a driving a force, an intention. How will we use our lives?

Spend time pondering your purpose. Write, draw, paint, or collage. Do whatever speaks to you about purpose, intention, and direction.

Summer Workshops in Phoenix

There are still spaces available for our workshops in Phoenix at Art Unraveled - just two weeks away!

August 2-3, 2016 - Art Unraveled, Phoenix, AZ

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 18: Spirit

What moves and resonates with our spirit? What feels authentic and true to us?

Spirit may elicit responses along spiritual or religious lines, and that’s fine. But spirit doesn’t have to be that specific. We all have an inner spirit. We all have a core being, and there are things that resonate with that spirit and bring us a sense of meaning, purpose, and joy. There are things that are in conflict with our spirit, and they bring us pain, discomfort, and a feeling of loss. Spirit is a sense of authenticity and truthfulness that is unique to each of us, and when we align with our spirit, we live an authentic and fulfilling life.

Examine the idea of spirit today, and contemplate what is authentic for you. Look at spirit in any way you wish through any lens you want. What does it mean to you and for you?

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 17: Joy

What brings us the most joy? How can we live with more joy?

We seek joy in our lives. Who wants misery and bleakness? We want the lightness and energy of joy to permeate our lives. We know that there will be times of sadness and darkness, but we can find joy in the simplest pleasures like the taste of ice cream on a hot summer day or watching a loved one sleep and dream. We can also find joy in the monumental events like marrying someone we love and adore or going on that trip of a lifetime to some far off locale. Even in our darkest hours we look for the light of joy - a bright moment to lift us from the darkness.

Spend time today contemplating your joy - big and small. Think about all of the things that bring you happiness and joy, and celebrate those things in any way that you see fit.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 16: Exploration

How can we be explorers in our own lives? How can we bring in more curiosity and find new ideas, places, and things to explore?

It might be part of human nature to explore and seek out new adventures, and we can learn so much about the world and about ourselves. We fly across oceans in search of excitement, and we seek out new experiences in our own neighborhoods. Then sometimes we feel very comfortable sitting on the couch safe at home. Seeking new adventures and exploring new territory can spark our curiosity and lead us to places and experiences that we could never imagine. We don’t have to seek adventure in far off lands. We can be adventurers in the places we live, and we can explore ideas, materials, and technique in the art that we make. Being an explorer is about having a mindset to walk a new or different path.

Take time to be an explorer today. Check out a new place in town, or try something new with your art. Open yourself to curiosity and let yourself explore a new idea, a new material, or a new experience. Go boldly where you have not gone before.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 15: Risk

How do we feel about taking risks? How can we open ourselves to allowing more risk into our lives?

Some people are very open to taking risks, and some others would rather play it safe. Either way, inviting a little bit of risk into our lives and into our ways of working can open us in surprising and unexpected ways. We might not be willing to take a life changing or a death defying risk, but we can find small ways to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. Taking leaps in our lives and in our art might seem scary, but they can break us out of old habits and give us a chance to grow and evolve.

Explore the idea of risk today as you work. Open yourself up to taking risks in your artmaking, and try something new or something unpredictable. Respond to your willingness to take risks, or react to the idea in general. Allow the notion of risk to spark ideas.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 14: Play

How do we make time to play? How can we make play a bigger part of our lives?

Play is not just for children. We all need time to let go and have a little fun. We learn and experiment through play, and we can rejuvenate ourselves with play. In our art we can play with ideas, or we can play with our materials trying out various methods and techniques. We can play with our children or play with our pets. We can play games, and we can play and act silly. So, let’s let loose a bit, and allow ourselves to have some fun.

Spend time today playing and see where it can take you with your artmaking.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 13: Work

Are we doing our life’s work? Is our work fulfilling and meaningful? What work lies ahead of us?

Work is a huge chunk of our lives. We work to make money and support ourselves and our families. We work around the house and in the yard. We work to help friends out, and often our recreational activities require a lot of work and effort. With work being such a part of our lives, it is often a good idea to stop and ponder the work that we are doing and reflect on whether that work resonates with who we are and how we see ourselves.

Take time today to ponder the work that you do in your life. Is your work meaningful and fulfilling? Are you doing the work that you want to do? What work is there left to do?

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 12: Balance

How do we find balance? How do we react when we are out of balance?

It seems so easy for our lives to swing out of balance in our contemporary times. So many things vie and compete for our attention that we can easily run ourselves ragged. Finding time to readjust and swing the internal pendulum back to center is a vital task. How we balance work, family, and all of those other obligations is of utmost importance in what can be a hectic world.

Spend some time today contemplating how balanced you and your life are. Reflect on what knocks you out of balance, or respond to what brings you back to center. Allow the idea of balance to spark your imagination and see where it takes you.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 11: Home

Where do we call home? When do we feel most at home?

Home is more than a physical place. It can be a feeling - a feeling of belonging, a feeling of ease, a feeling of being cared about and being cared for. Home is also more than a structure with walls, roof, windows, and doors. Many of us feel at home in the woods, or in the city, or in a particular situation. For many home is a place of sanctuary, but for many others home is place of turmoil and turbulence. Home can conjure up many memories of childhood, or it can conjure notions for our lives in the future.

Allow the idea of home to guide you in your creative endeavors today. Think about where you consider home or where you feel most at home, and respond in any way that feels right to you. Remember that there is no right way to respond, and allow the idea to be a spark.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 10: Fear

What are our deepest or recurring fears? How can we confront and overcome those lingering or overwhelming fears?

Fear is an inevitable part of being alive, and we may find that there are many things that bring us fear. Some of those fears are normal and understandable, and some are overwhelming and irrational. We might be afraid of the dark, afraid of being alone, or afraid of creepy crawlies. We may fear our weaknesses or fear another’s power, or we may fear doing something new or being stuck in a rut. We can deal with fear by letting it paralyze us, or we can confront it and see if there is a way to move forward.

Take a few moments to think about fear in your life. You might want to consider the role that fear has, or you might want to confront those specific fears that pop up and keep you from moving forward. You can ponder how you deal with and overcome your fears, or you can explore fear in very general terms. Respond to the idea of fear in a way that seems appropriate to you.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 9: Hope

What are our deepest and most sincere hopes? How can we pursue those hopes and follow our dreams?

Hope can keep us going even through the darkest of times. Hope gives us a glimmer of light during times of struggle and stress, and when we feel defeated and overwhelmed, hope can lift us up and carry us forward. Our hopes are our brightest aspirations for the future and our brightest wishes for a better tomorrow.

Spend some time reflecting on your hopes and dreams. You might list all of your hopes, or you might focus on your deepest and most specific wish for your future. You might even consider the actions you need to take in order to fulfill these hopes. Just let the idea of hope guide you as you work.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 8: Connection

How do we connect to ourselves? How do we connect to others? How do we connect to the places that we inhabit?

Everything is connected. Nothing is separate or completely isolated, though at times it might feel that way. If we look closely, we will find that we are connected to so many things in so many different ways. We have family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. We are connected to our homes, our jobs, and the places that we move through on a daily basis or visit occasionally. We feel drawn to certain people, specific ideas, and special places.

Take time today to explore the connections that you have in your life. You might want to focus on a very special connection, or you might want to think about the vast number of connections that you have in your life. Draw, paint, photograph, or write about those connections in any way that you feel is appropriate.

If you share via those social media outlets, don’t forget the hashtags #jfjbigideas or #jfj16.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 7: Growth

How have we grown over the past year, over the past ten, or over our lifetime? How does the world around us grow?

Growth is the process of life. We are born, and we grow. We are children, and then we grow into adults. Plants and animals all grow. They live and they die. Even communities can grow as people and businesses move to an area. But growth isn't just a physical phenomenon. We can grow emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We mature and hopefully gain insight and wisdom into our lives.

Take time today to ponder how you, your children, your pets, or your community have grown. Focus on growth as a general process, or delve into the personal ways you have grown. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to respond. Just allow the idea of growth be the spark for exploration.

JFJ Big Idea Challenge - Day 6: Change

How do we handle change? How have we changed over time? How can we affect positive change?

Everything changes. It’s a fact of life. We grow older, and our physical appearance changes. The seasons change. What was once new becomes old. People change. Change is all around us, so how do we respond to it.

Use the notion of change as the starting point for the art today, and see where it takes you. You might think about the idea of change in a broader, more philosophical way, or you might want to explore how you have changed.

Keep those posts on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and personal blogs coming, and use the hashtags #jfjbigideas or #jfj16 so that you can share with others.
